Meliora Bio is a modern state-of-the-art biorefinery in Kalundborg upcycling straw for bioethanol, prebiotics, and lignin. The refinery was built by Ørsted in 2009, and since 2020 it has been owned by Ree Office.
Together with a dedicated Canadian partner, Comet Bio, Meliora Bio produces Arabinoxylan, a healthy and sustainable prebiotic food ingredient. Meliora Bio also produces advanced, second-generation bioethanol to blend with gasoline for car fuel, causing a 1:1 reduction of 90 per cent CO2-emission from the car. The straw, which is all locally sourced, is also used to produce lignin, currently used as green energy (steam) for the production.
In the future, lignin has the potential to replace polymers in several applications, and Meliora Bio is involved in several research projects to deliver on this potential.
